I assume that it tries to maintain the same flux concentration within itself which would result in it correcting its position if it got too far from or too close to the magnetic track.
The same would happen if it started to move off to one side. I don't think the ceramic block has any magnetic properties before he cools it down, so it stays where it's put (on the spacer) to start with..
